In Praise of My Boss

October 16: National Boss’ Day.  A day-long observance in which we honor and appreciate our bosses.

In honor of the occasion, I’d like to say a few words about my boss.

My boss has given me the opportunity to use my talents for good, even though I struggle against instincts that encourage me use them for entertainment.  (He occasionally lets me have a little fun along the way.)

When I left my previous position, my boss promised me I wouldn’t be bored.  He’s followed through on that.  (Occasionally reminding me that the phrase, “May you always live in interesting times,” can read as a blessing or a curse.)

My boss provides me with plenty of clients who need my assistance, and even lets it look like I had a part in the rainmaking.  (I know better, but I appreciate him for not taking all the credit, even though they’re all his clients in the end.)

My boss promised to pay me a salary sufficient to cover my needs – and despite some difficulties, has always paid me on time.  (Even when it appeared impossible.)

My boss isn’t always the easiest to work for.  At times, the work demands more of me than I think I want to give.  Some of my assignments defy description (others merely defy positive description).  In the end, I’m less an attorney than a jack-of-all-trades (and we all know the second part of that, don’t we), on the job and on call 24/7/365.  Working for my boss requires fortitude, determination and adaptability (two outta three ain’t bad…).  Fortunately, my boss offers on-the-job training.

Most people think I work for myself.  They see my name on the door, along with my law partner’s name, but they miss the managing partner (though his symbol is there, for those who look).  They credit us with making rain.  They think we’ve built something notable, something special.  They appreciate our business ethic, our professionalism and our attention to detail.  They think we do this for ourselves.

They’re wrong.

I serve the best – and only – boss anyone can serve.  He knows my thoughts.  He plans for my welfare.  He sees farther and more clearly than I can see, and as long as I depend upon him daily he will never fail to provide for my needs.  It’s only when I want to become the boss that I start having problems, and only when I forget who I work for that I risk failure rather than success.

I may or may not grow rich working for the LORD, but when it comes to job satisfaction and the ability to live with myself, I’m a very wealthy yak.  Not to mention, I’ve got the best retirement plan going.  Not something too many lawyers can say.

  1. Although it is pretty clear Who your boss is from, “My boss has given me the opportunity to use my talents for good, even though I struggle against instincts that encourage me use them for entertainment,” the exposition was such that I’m referring both my children to this post.

    Thanks!

  2. BTW, an aside: clear out the cobwebs on your thinking about entertainment. Entertainment does NOT have to be wasted time, negative use of efforts, unproductive or anything else “not good”. :-) Hopefully, your work can be productive, positive, even creative AND entertaining (at least from time to time, if not continuously).

So, don’t so much “struggle against instincts that encourage me use [your talents] for entertainment” but seek to channel them into good effect.

    Just a lil nit picking.

    ;-)

  3. Heh. If only you knew. Actually, “entertainment” isn’t always bad, though at the time of initial composition “entertainment” served as a barely-disguised euphemism for “personal pinatas of fisk” – itself a larger euphemism for the sort of things that amuse me, but probably don’t entertain my *cough* victims quite as thoroughly. Fortunately, the boss gives me plenty of opportunities (blog included) to exercise the snark, which keeps everyone happy.
