Official”Chocolate-Chip Day” and official “Mustard Day” both fall on August 4.

As a general rule, I favor the liberal use of chocolate chips (in all senses of the word). Where appropriate, I also favor liberal use of mustard (Though I confess slightly less fondness for mustard than for chocolate. Call it a character flaw.).

I think I have to draw the line at simultaneous observance, however. I tried, but I cannot come up with a singlesimultaneous use of chocolate chips and mustard which sounds even remotely palatable. (And in fact, most of my hypothetical creationswouldresult in severe sanctions for violation of the Culinary Morality Code.)

To put it plainly: I doubt even the iron chefs would try this one. Clam flan we can live with. Chocolate-mustard chicken raises the ante to an entirely new (andbest unconsidered) level.

So feel free to celebrate. Observe to your heart’s content. Consume mustard and chocolate chips till the yaks come home.

But please … don’t eat them together.
