Monday Frivol: It’s a Small World After All

Filed under: Frivol — Random Yak @ 9:27 am on July 23, 2007

An Arizona woman stopped off at a local book store to report $200 in fraudulent purchases recently made at the store using her credit card. Following the theft of the woman’s purse, someone had charged approximately $700 to her credit card, purchasing a variety of items – including the $200 in CDs purchased from the bookstore.

While the woman waited for a manager to resolve the issue, she stepped aside to let a young man approach the customer service counter. The 22 year-old man wanted to return several music CDs and obtain a cash refund. The transaction required amanager’a approvalbecause the CDs (worth approximately $200…) were originally purchased using a credit card.

The manager reviewed the woman’s report, picked up the young man’s credit card receipt and paused before stating, “This is the transaction.” The man fled the scene, but policeapprehended him a short distance away, at which point he confessed to stealing the woman’s purse and purchasingthe CDs and a number of other items using the stolen credit card.

The thief might have gotten away completely but for the serendipitous timing of the exchange and thestore manager’s ability to readbetween the lines. All of which goes to prove that not it’s not just a small world, some days it’s downright miniscule. Let’s hopeat least thiscriminalhas learned that when you try tosteal media using someone else’s credit card, you’re going to end up… booked.
