July 16: official “Get Out of the Doghouse Day.”

Now, working from the theory that one gets into the doghouse through inappropriate or inconsiderate actions, one should be able to get out of the doghouse by exhibiting proper, courteous and considerate behavior. While I’m not altogether sure what that entails, personal experience has led me to a fairly solid understanding of Actions Not Considered Considerate or Socially Appropriate, For Which Residence in the Doghouse is A Suggested Remedy.

In light of this, permit me to offer a list of things you should not do if you want to get out of the doghouse today:

1. Eating the last cookie. (Or the last five.)

2. Responding to the question, “Does this make me look fat?” with “Well, it doesn’t exactly make you look thin.”

3. Leaving a wet swimming-pool towel draped over the back of the kitchen chairs (and no, “the phone rang and I forgot to go back for it” isn’t an acceptable excuse).

4. Anything involving dirty socks and portions of the house company sees. (With extra faction loss if company actually does see them.)

5. Answering the question, “why didn’t you replace the toilet paper roll?” with anythingremotely resembling an attempt at humor.

6. Writing a list of “ways to stay out of the doghouse” that incorporates things for which you’ve actually gotten in trouble during the past week(note my willingness to sacrifice for my art….).
