Have to admit, memes are easy when you’re in the weeds. Inspiration is low, so I appreciate the opportunity to riff on someone else’s topic from time to time.
Today’s topic comes from “Booking Through Thursday” – a newly-discovered meme blog dedicated to Thursday book-related memes. As a bibliophile, I think I’m going to like this. The topic du jour: School Days, Golden Rule Days. The prompt:
- Do you have any old school books? Did you keep yours from college? Old textbooks from garage sales? Old workbooks from classes gone by?
- How about your old notes, exams, papers? Do you save them? Or have they long since gone to the great Locker-in-the-sky?
My responses:
1. Yes, in large quantities. I have books from law school (mostly filled with notes), books from college (completely filled with notes), and a number of books from high school (mostly literature, though far less filled with notes). I keep them primarily for the notes, though many of the books themselves areout of print (I’m not older than dirt, but I’m trying) and I can’t bear to give them up for fear I’d never find another copy.
As a related aside, I used to have several spiral notebooks filled with Chinese characters -practice notebooks from college days, whenI spent countless hours memorizing characters by writing them over, and over (and over, and over, and over…) again. I threw them away primarily for fear The Random Spouse would think we had a little Shining going on. (Statistically, 24% of you got the reference. 2. I celebrated high school graduation with two friends and a bonfire made entirely of Math, English and History notes. So no, no high school notes. I have no idea what happened to my college notes. Pack rat that I am, I had them neatly filed in packing boxes for a long time, but they must have fallen off a truck somewhere between the East Coast and the West (Chinese character practice books excepted). No great loss. Like all college students, I thought I knew much more than I actually should have claimed credit for.Law school notes were carefully saved until the day I learned I passed the California Bar Exam, at which pointI gleefully dumped most of them in the round file – understanding only too well that last year’s law, like last month’s computer upgrade,would probably be obsolete long before I found it helpful.
