Tuesday Frivol: Bullets, Hammers and Other Safety Tips

Filed under: Frivol — Random Yak @ 10:44 am on May 15, 2007

So many ways to go with this one, so little time…

A New York teenager recently suffered injuries to his abdomen after hitting a bullet with a hammer. The teen apparently placed the bullet in a vise, then hit it with a hammer in order to empty the round and collect the brass casing to sell for scrap.

The story makes the frivol news not because the teen injured himself, nor even for the method in which the injury occurred, but due to the fact that he somehow managed to hit over 100 other bullets with the hammer prior to the injury.

And apparently didn’t figure out this was a bad idea until one finally discharged and hurt him, despite the fact that boys have been hitting bullets with hammers to no good ends since the beginning of time and I highly doubt he managed to reach his teenage years without hearing at least one “nine-fingered veteran” story.

The bullet only went in about half an inch, and the story suggests the teen will fully recover. Let’s just hope that recovery isn’t so complete that he goes back to playing with bullets and hammers. And in the interest of keeping him (and others)out of harm’s way in the future, here are a few other things you should never, ever hit with a hammer:

1. Siblings. (Especially if they’re bigger than you.)

2. C4 and other explosives (Yes, I know some detonate “only” with fuses. No, I don’t know enough about them to test that theory.)

3. United States Marines. (You might slow them down. Maybe. But I wouldn’t count on it.)

4. Big ugly dogs. (Sleeping or not)

5. Mom’s flowers. (Or her windows. Or her car. Or anything else she’s fond of.)

6. Plumbing and fire hydrants. (Unintended shower-bath…party of you…)

There’s more, but I think we’ve pretty much covered the territory.
