"No Extra Price for Puff" (OTP)

Filed under: Random Linkfests — Random Yak @ 10:47 am on May 14, 2007

Under the new U.S. Postal Regulations (which went into effect this morning) those wishing to send snail mail in the United States now have to ask how much an envelope weighs and how far they’ve stuffed – because puffage carries an extra charge.

Under previous rules, postal customers paid a flat fee for a regular #10 envelope weighing up to one ounce, and an additional (slightly reduced) fee for each additional ounce. Stuffing additional pages into the envelope didn’t make a difference unless the weight increased.

The new regulations make a number of changes to the old “pay by weight” system, most notably increased charges for large or oddly-shaped envelopes and for envelopes measuring more than 1/4″ in width. According to the USPS, if your envelope puffs out beyond the 1/4″ limit, you’re paying up to 80 cents for that first ounce (regularly 41 cents after the new rate increase)) for the inconvenience and insensitivity of daring to mail an envelope with an inappropriate shape.

Because we all know fat letters are less healthy than skinny letters, right? (Some of you can probably see this one coming…but don’t look for this meme to disappear any time soon. Certainly not before the Thursday 13.)

Well, some things change…but some things don’t. Here at The Random Yak, you’ll never pay more for the puff. So link away – stuff the link list full of posts and information – we won’t complain. Consider this your open trackback post, from now until I find something else to complain about.
