Park it.

A Random Thought:

People who cannot successfully parkSUVs in a single parking space should not bepermitted to drive them.

Few things torque me like pulling through a crowded parking lot toward the one available space, only to find that someone has cross-parked their SUV so that the front passenger-side wheels extend two feet into the next space over.

It’s not a difficult concept. See the white lines? They are wider than your vehicle. The object of the game is placing the vehicle inside the lines.

Sometimes I wonder whether these are the same folks who had trouble with the “inside the lines” concept in kindergarten or whether they’re suffering some kind of adult-onset line recognition disorder.

And don’t try to tell me they’re not aware of it. Not two weeks ago I watched a woman (Don’t call me sexist. Thetruth hurts) pull her SUV onto the line between two parking spaces, exit the vehicle, look at the parking spaces and head into the store. Had I not been (a) at the head of a large line oftraffic, and (b) (justifiably) concerned about being arrested for assaulting a well-coiffed woman in a parking lot, I might well have leaped from myvehicle to inquire about her line blindness and whether it impacted other facets of her life.

Don’t try to explain that “it’s hard to park them” either. That dog won’t hunt in this field. If you can’thandle the vehicle in an appropriate manner, you shouldn’t be driving it. Or parking it. So learn to maneuver the behemoth thing or get yourself aMini Cooperand be done with it.

On second thought, go with the Mini. You’ll probably still park in two spaces, butat least the rest of us will be ableto push you out of the way.

  1. My wife drove a one-ton Chevrolet truck to work for nine months in the DC area. It’s a dually with a full back seat, so it’s 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and weighs a little over 7,000 pounds. She can park that thing in a space some people couldn’t hit with a mini-van. No jockeying for position either, just one quick back, dead center into a space. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.

  2. See? I knew it could be done!

Actually, I’ve done it myself, with a 16-footer. Not sure I could manage the 22, so kudos to your wife for a job probably done better than 90% of the population.

She doesn’t have to drive the Cooper unless she wants to.
