A 3.5 ton yellow submarine has gone missing in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The sub,constructed from a converted propane tank in the 1940s, spent most of the intervening years hanging from a land berth in Felton, California. Although the builder originally wanted the sub to run private patrols of Monterey Bay in the ’40s and ’50s, he apparently ran only a few “covert ops” before permanently beaching the vessel.

Police have no suspects, though neighbors apparently saw an unidentified person or persons loading the submarine onto a tow truck some time in February. The current theory is that the sub was not stolen for scrap value, but rather because someone “wanted” the submarine itself.

The Beatles could not be reached for comment.
