Some may remember, though many have likely forgotten, the Great Open Trackback Wars of 2005/2006. (OK, nobody else called them that, but some of you might have noticed that I enjoy making mountains out of molehills when it suits my purpose.)
I remember the situationfairly clearly, primarily because this blog was then in its infancy (and incapable of accepting trackbacks, though we could send them – barely) and although blogging wasn’t exactly a new form (yes, I blogged elsewhere before I blogged here, though I won’t tell you where or when) I wouldn’t have called myself adept by any stretch of the imagination, and all things “blog” provided a source of education and interest.
Particularly when it comes to creative solutions to practical problems – which to me, is what the open trackback idea was all about.
Blogs survive because people read them. People read them because they hear about them. People hear about them because they either (a) knew about them already, (b) stumble across them at random (we’ll discuss my experiences with Google another time) or (c) discover them through a link from another blog- which of course is what the open trackback was designed to encourage and facilitate.
Ecosystem founder N.Z. Bear didn’t particularly like the idea, primarily because his ecosystem functions on a “incoming links counted” basis – and open trackbacks counted. Which, in his mind, apparently amounted to cheating the system. Now, I’m not necessarily against separating theknuckle-walkers from the upright, frontal-lobe users (though I think we probably ought to do it in Congress before we worry too much about the bloggers) but – seeing as I was then something of a virus-level organism myself – I also didn’t see the harm in a little shameless cross-promotion now and again.
At the time, I understood it as something that might help people find my blog.
A year down the line, I recognize it as something infinitely more useful: a tool which simultaneously keeps my finger on the pulse of the right-wing blogs, lets me know what is (and more importantly, what isn’t) prompting discussion and helps me locate new blogs for my ever-growing reading list. (Yes, I read more than what you see on the blogroll. Much, much more.)
While some may still use the OTP as a method of raising ratings or driving traffic (and I don’t deny its usefulness in that regard) I’m discovering an increasing personal tendency to use itas asource of usefulinformation. When I send out a post, I try to send it toaselection of blogs whose focus and readers might find the article of interest. When hosting, I take a look at every link that comes in (probably a surprise, but I do), if only to keep an eye on topics someone else is adequately covering (thereby freeing me up to write on others).
I’m not sure whether this is an intentional side effect or an accidental one but it’shelpful either way, especially with the rising popularity of open trackbacks and trackback participants. As a blogging tool, the OTP has multiple advantages and very few drawbacks – which, of course, is why I’ll continue to offer (and participate in)them as long as I’m defending this side of the mountain.
