I spend way too much time reading the news. After some consideration, I have decided this is because reporters spend way, way too much time writing about things that could better be summarized in far, far fewer words. Particularly when there’s just not that much I have to say about any of it.
As a public service announcement, I have decided to summarize the top news stories of the day, so you don’t have to bother reading them. Today’s State of the Mountain Report:
1. House Democrats passed a stem cell research bill that can’t survive the President’s Veto. (Why? Because someone must havedecided a futile act would make it look like they’ve done something other than kick and scream in those oh-so-important first 100 hours.)
2. Oklahoma is looking down the barrel of a big ice storm. (Al Gore was not immediately available for “neener neener”s)
3. The U.S. Embassy in Greece was attacked by what appear to be Greek leftist terrorists. Someonesent a rocket-propelled grenade into the Embassy bathroom. (No one but a toilet was injured.) Story developing.
4. Barbara Boxer demonstrated yet again why some of us are ashamed to have her represent us, by implying that Condoleezza Riceisn’t fit to make decisions about Iraq because she has no children, and therefore won’t be the one “paying the price.”A brilliant piece of oratory that not only misses the entire point of representative government but also displays a remarkable level of personal insensitivity. (Nice job, Barbara. Next time, kick her dog on the way out.)
5. A giant whale shark named Ralph died at the Georgia Aquarium. (Apparently, this is what passes for news in Georgia.)
6. Several members of Jimmy Carter’s advisory staff quit, claiming he’s abandoned his neutrality in favor of partisanship. (I guess theyjust figured it out.)
7. I was also going to read and summarize this article about procrastination, but I decided I’d do it later.
