Shortly thereafter, Van Gogh committed himself to a mental hospital, where he spent a year theoretically recovering from bouts of mental illness (he did ultimately commit suicide following a recurrence of severe depression, so “recovering” isn’t necessarily a factual truth).
Van Gogh continued to paint during his stay (which may or may not explain quite a bit about some of his later paintings).
Curiously, Van Gogh became a success only after his death (not that he’s unique in this respect), partly due to the self-mutilation that left him earless but marked him as unique among his painting peers.
Little known fact: Van Gogh once spent time as a pastor, preaching to miners in Belgium. He gave this up in 1880 to focus on painting full-time. Despite his artistic talent, one wonders what he might have done (and whether he would have done it longer) had he painted with more focus on God and less focus on the depression that ultimately destroyed him.
