Random Facts About Poinsettias

December 12:”Poinsettia Day.”

You know: poinsettias, the red-leafed plants (yes, those are leaves, not flowers) everyone loves having around for Christmas.

In honor of the day: Random Facts About Poinsettias:

1. Poinsettias do not have red flowers. (Those red things are leaves, folks. The yellow bits in the center are the flowers.)

2. Poinsettias can grow to 16′ in height. (Not that most of them survive long enough to do so.)

3. The ancient Maya believed poinsettias were powerful creatures from another world. (So powerful all they do is sit there, rooted to the ground, ruling you with the power of their minds…)

4. Poinsettias are not poisonous, though eating them can make you sick to your stomach. (Which is essentially what you deserve if you’re still eating houseplants at your age.)

5. In Nahuatl, the word for poinsettia means “excrement flower.” (And you put it on the dinner table, didn’t you?)

6. The average wild poinsettia has a life expectancymeasured in years and requires a subtropical climate. (The average poinsettia in my home has a life expectancy measured in minutes and requires that the cats not notice its presence.)

7. 74% of Americans prefer red poinsettias. (100% of cats can’t tell the difference in blind taste tests.)

8. Catseat poinsettias (but they cannot digest them).

9. Joel Roberts Poinsett, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, brought the Poinsettia to the United States in 1825. (Which explains why we call them Poinsettias. Well, that and the fact that nobody’s going to buy a “Christmas Excrement Flower.”)

10. The “poinsettia cocktail” is made of vodka, sparkling wine and cranberry juice. (It doubtless tastes better than the real thing.)

Information partially retrieved from, and partly from the voices in my head.
