“Peas on Earth” Veteran’s Day Weekend Wishes (and OTP)

Christmas Alliance Day 16: P.

Only one real choice here: Peas. As in, Peas on Earth, GratinFor Men. (Though what peas and potatoes are doing without a nice steak is somewhat beyond me.)

Kidding aside… on this Veteran’s Day Weekend it seems somehow appropriate to land on “P,” because veterans and Christians alike hope to live their lives infurtherance of peace. More to the point, Christians and veterans alike strive for peace – but not at any cost.

Peace does not come cheaply. Its price is often measured in lives and innocence lost. No Christian, and no veteran, enjoys this reality, but both true Christians and honorable veterans recognize the hard truth that”peace, good will toward men” is not the world’s natural state. We also recognize thatpeace is worth fighting for.

The heavenly proclamation of Christ’s birth to the shepherds was a message of peace:

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2.8-11, KJV)

But Christ himself acknowledged that thepeacewe will enjoy in the Kingdom of God does not come without division and struggle:

“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.” (Luke 12.51-53, KJV)

Yet no Christian – and no veteran – escapes the duty to pursue peace, justice and righteousness by virtue of the fact that the path may be difficult or unpleasant. On the contrary, the pursuit of peace through just and justified war, like the pursuit of God’s Kingdom through spiritual war, are the honorable obligations of every soldier, spiritual and temporal.

Peace, at the cost of justice, morality and righteousness, is no peace at all.

And so, on this Veteran’s Day (observed, and weekend) we thank all those who stand for peace and justice despite the cost. We pray for their safety, at home and abroad, and we seek the guidance of the Creator God and His son, Jesus Christ, whose birth we prepare to celebrate next month. We pray for the fulfillment of His Kingdom and His peace on earth and for the protection of those laboring to perfect and encourage temporal and spiritual peace intimes of war.
