No Hung Jury – Dictator’s Results May Vary

Filed under: News Yaks — Random Yak @ 12:57 pm on November 6, 2006

The hugh tribunal in Iraq handed down itsverdict Sunday: Saddam Hussein has been found guilty of “crimes against humanity” and sentenced to death by hanging.

Death sentences automatically go before a nine-judge appeals panel, which apparently has unlimited time to review thetrial court’s ruling. The AP is reporting that the appeal process should take approximately a month “once the formal paperwork [is] submitted.” If upheld on appeal, Hussein’s sentence will be carried out within thirty days of the appellate court ruling.

Hussein himself apparently continues to regard the entire process as a joke, “waggling his finger at the judge” during the sentencing and refusing to stand or otherwise show appropriate respect for the legal process (Insert shock, wonder andsurprise). We’ll see if he’s laughing three months from now.

I had an e-mail from a friend earlier this morning asking me whether I thought justice had been served. My response:If he really does hang, God willhandle the justice.

Here’s your roundup of other reactions on the ‘nets this morning:

Confederate Yankee has the reaction from an Iraqi source (but not likely one you’ll see quoted much in the MSM).

Video of the verdict posted at Flopping Aces.

Hot Air also has the video, a breakdown and an explanation of the massacre at Dujail (the incident for which Hussein has been tried and sentenced to die). Allahpundit also has links to the liberal reactions by Amnesty International and the Huffington Post. Warning: graphic photos.

Hussein’s supporters act predictably, as does Hussein himself. Their reactions at Stop the ACLU.

Mary Katherine Ham has the reaction – and comments – of President Bush.

The sentencing judge expelled Ramsey Clark from the hearing. Michelle Malkin is just as glad as the rest of us.

Right Wing Howler points out a possible loophole that could halt the execution even if the verdict stands.

Sachi at Big Lizards points out (correctly in my opinion) that Saddam’s sentence – even if carried out – may not (and likely will not) solve the problems facing Iraq, particularly in the wake of Nouri al-Maliki’s recent behavior.

The verdict, the video and continuing political updates at Wizbang. (along with a nice related piece called “Martyrs R Us“)

Don Surber takes the opportunity to explain why he supports the death penalty.

Also linked to others reporting on the verdict at Cigar Intelligence Agency, Big Dog’s Weblog, The Jawa Report (with semi-unrelated video), andRhymes with Right.
