November 6: “The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict”
Or, as I’m calling it, “Surely You Jest day.”
First off, I am (as of this morning) morally opposed to any observance which cannot be titled(or described) in less than five words. If half the morning’s gone before you can finish telling me what we’re doing, I’m gonna go have another Danish. Call me when you’ve got it figured out more thoroughly – and when I wake up from the sugar coma, we’ll talk.
But my reaction to the title barely scratches the surface on this one (not that they want me to scratch the surface…or harm the beetles…or de-leaf the trees). Take a second look at the observance title. Really look. Do you see what I see?
Here’s a hint: what are they really trying to avoid?
Yep. International Day for PreventingExploitation of the Environment…
Note that we’re not concerned about the prevention of war or armed conflict.
Don’t worry about the war. In fact, get out there and shoot one another(it makes more room for the animals)- but don’t you hurt the plants while you’re at it. Or the spotted owls. Or the lemurs.
For those who might be somewhat confused, permit me to offer a few “Random Ways to Save the Environment During War and Armed Conflict”
1. Don’t use guns(guns do something called “fire” – and fire causes global warming). Sticks are okay, as long as you don’t point them at the animals.
2. Make sure someone walks in front of your troops beating a big drum so all the animals know to move out of the way. This goes double for stealthy units like snipers, who might not otherwise provide adequate notice of their presence.(Even the enemy willappreciate your concern.)
3. Watch out for fleeing gastropods. (Remember: snailsrun slowly.)
4.Pass over environmentally-insensitive vehicles like tanks in favor of environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles.You can’t destroy the environmentwith a Ford Focus! (Your reputation is another matter.)
5. Replace bullets with apple seeds, so unspent rounds can be used to repopulate native forests!
And remember…it’s all fun and games until somebody loses a lemur.
