October 31 is Reformation Day.
October 31, 1517: Martin Luther posts his 95 Theses on the doors of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. The event led to a controversy which eventually resulted in Luther’s excommunication – and the birth of the Lutheran church (and others). I’d do a more elaborate Reformation Day post, but unless I’m much mistaken doing so might just step on some (cough – Maniyak) toes, so I’ll leave it there for the moment.
Some people also consider October 31 a goodexcuseto dress up in costumes andtake candy from strangers. (Or, if you’re like me, a good excuse to sit home, watch television and eat all the candy before the neighbor kids can take it from you.)
As a toddler, Yak the Younger referred to October 31 as “Howl-O-Mean” – a misunderstanding that (as such thingsdo) quickly became family tradition. So, at least on my side of the mountain, today is also “Howl-O-Mean.”
I’m guessing reactions to October 31 vary widelyaround the ‘nets, solet’s do a little “bobbing for bloggers” and see what’s going on out there today:
Forget something? The newest Dimmer Switch from our friends at The Platypus Society has all the last-minute Howl-O-Mean information you could possibly want or need. (There’s a reason this one leads the list, folks. I got a tea bag in my candy sack once. I still bear the emotional scars…)
Wizbang is telling scary, scary stories. (Congress and elections and Moonbats – Oh, My!)
Halloween doodles over at Flying Spacemonkey Chronicles. (I said Doodles. With a pencil.)
Llama Robert has it out with designer Jack-O-Lanterns (Wonder what he’d think of the one-eyed wonder on my front porch…hardly a “designer” piece, unless “Cyclops Pumpkin” is ‘in’ this year.)
Althouse has the British reaction to the Americanized-meaningless-celebration-once-known-as-Halloween. (See? All this walking and asking requires too much effort. Bowl of candy and a television set, that’s what I’m talking about.)
All the stem cell news you could ask for (and other stories too), courtesy of The Anchoress. (Looks like the champions of adult-and-umbilical-cord-cell research have won another point in the debate – surprise, surprise.)
John Kerry Says: “Study Hard, Kids – or you’ll end up in Iraq with the real dummies!” (OK, that’s not it exactly, but it’s close…Moonbattery has the scoop.)
This is also your Reformation Day/Howl-O-Mean Midweek Open Trackback Post. Link and trackback from now until Thursday night. Linked to Linkfest Haven – because that’s what we do!

Full disclosure:
About three years ago on Halloween night I ran out of candy, but instead of turning off the porch light I opted to hand out packets of hot chocolate the last half hour. The parents thought it was a neat idea, but the children were not amused.
They did have the little marshmallows in them. Swiss Miss, I think it was.
