Thursday 13: Under the Driver’s Seat

Filed under: Thursday Thirteen — Random Yak @ 3:48 pm on August 17, 2006

I’ve often pondered the nature of the space under the seats in the car. You know what I’m talking about – that three-inch, not-quite-enough-for-a-canteloupe-but-easily-swallows-a-sneaker sized space that serves as a collector for some of the most unusual (and telling) items known to man.

Most of us hesitate before cleaning the car (or better, get someonewe allegedly loveto do it) in part because we just don’t want to reach under there and find out what’s taken up residence since the last time we cleaned out the car. (OK, that’s my reasoning. But I’m attributing it to the rest of you because I don’t like feeling alone.)

With that in mind, permit me to offer up my Thursday 13:

The Thirteen Strangest, Most Random Things I Ever Found Under the Driver’s Seat When Cleaning OutMy Car

1. A meatball. (Fortunately, alreadymummified. Absolutely no idea whereit came from.)

2. Keys to someone else’s house.(Never did figure out whose.)

3. A hermit crab. (Correction: a LIVE hermit crab. Beat that one.)

4. The title to The Random Family’s other car. (Can’t figure this one out for the life of me.)

5. Fake Fingernails. (I suppose it’s better than real ones. Maybe.)

6. A golf club. (Okay, technically it was only half a golf club.)

7. Sprinkler heads. (Resolving an unanswered question about escapees from my last garden project.)

8. A live spider. (Well, it was live when I found it.)

9. An unopened can of orange soda. (Unusualbecause it was unopened. And ancient.)

10. One brand-new dark-blue shoelace. (Who uses blue shoelaces? And more to the point:what happened to the other one?)

11.A box of staples. (No stapler. Just staples.)

12. Coins. (Not odd you say? They wereRussiancoins.)

13. Matches. (Odd, because no one in The Random Family smokes.)

  2. AND, I thought my car was in bad shape! I don’t think I can get hardly anything under my driver’s seat. Now, you might find a can of hairspray, or flashlight under there – although they usually are in the floorboard. It’s usually a paper towel or kleenex under my seat, or perhaps a stray pencil. But, the rest of my car is in need of cleaning!!

    Thanks for the link!

  3. Thanks – and yes, it was right after a move and the crab had deserted his home en route. Lucky crab.
